Description: This is a painting of Guidon of the 71st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. It is a swallowtail flag with a square blue field. There are 34 stars in the field, representing the states of the Union at the beginning of the Civil War. The inner circle has twelve stars, the outer circle has eighteen stars and there is a star in each corner. The painting was done by Rob Needham. At the bottom of the painting is printed "71st Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Photographs of the flags and the paintings are now part of the society's archival collections. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Major Anson George McCook is pictured in this 4.5 by 6.25-inch (11.36 by 15.88 cm) photograph. Anson was the son of John and Catherine Julia Sheldon McCook and a member of the Fighting McCooks, an Ohio family that sent fifteen men to serve in the Civil War. Before the Civil War, he studied law in the firm of his cousin George Wythe McCook and Edwin Stanton. Anson McCook served in the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) and the 194th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.). Following the war, he enjoyed a successful career in government, serving as assessor of internal revenue and U.S. senator from New York. Daniel McCook, Sr. and his eight sons, together with his brother John McCook and his five sons, fought in the Civil War. Daniel (1798-1863) and John (1806-1865) were born in Pennsylvania, and moved to Lisbon in Columbiana County, Ohio in 1826. Daniel subsequently moved to Carrollton, where he served as Carroll County's first clerk of the court of common pleas. John settled in Steubenville, where he practiced medicine. When President Lincoln made the first call for volunteers, 63-year-old Daniel Sr. answered and his sons and relatives followed. Daniel Sr., Daniel Jr., Robert Latimer, and Charles Morris McCook were killed in the war. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows members of the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the first African American regiment recruited in Ohio during the Civil War. The regiment was formed in 1863, and was subsequently designated as the 5th Regiment, United States Colored Troops. The photograph was taken in Delaware, Ohio, on Sandusky Street near the Ft. Delaware Hotel. In May 1863, Massachusetts became the first state to organize a regiment of African Americans. Because Ohio did not then allow black men to join its regiments, many Ohioans enlisted in the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments. In the summer of 1863, Ohio Governor David Tod authorized the recruitment of African Americans, and the 127th was formed in Delaware, Ohio, between August and November 1863 as an African American regiment organized under white officers. Description: General Emerson Opdycke, a native of Trumbull County, enlisted as a private in the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) and was quickly promoted to captain. At the Battle of Shiloh, Opdycke, despite being wounded, picked up the regiment's fallen flag and led a charge that halted the Confederate advance. Governor David Tod ordered Opdycke home, promoted him to colonel and asked him to recruit and command the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was organized in October 1862. Throughout the rest of the war, this unit was known for its courage and tenacity, earning the name "Opdycke's Tigers." This daguerreotype with case measures 3.5" by 6.5" (8.89 by 16.51 cm). Description: The hand-sewn wool flag was carried by Company F, 148th Ohio Volunteer Infantry of Washington County (Ohio). The 36 stars are arranged symmetrically in canton pattern of six rows by six rows. Nevada added the 36th star in 1864 (October 31). Comprised of the 96th Battalion of Vinton County and the 46th of Washington County, the 148th mustered out of Marietta on May 18, 1864 under Colonel Thomas W. Moore. On May 23 the Regiment was involved in an accident on the Union Railroad leaving three soldiers seriously wounded. The 148th Ohio Volunteer Infantry mustered out September 14, 1864. By the war's end they had lost 2 officers and 37 enlisted men from disease. View on Ohio Memory.
